What does it all mean?
A friend recently asked how I came up with my Twitter name - and consequently, my Tumblr persona - what inspired it, why I settled on it, what does it all mean? (OK, that might be a little too existential).
Have you ever heard the New Pornographers’ song, “Unguided”? There’s one line in that song that has always really stuck with me.
“To learn your lines before you have the part.”
I am totally guilty of this. I’ll get caught up in the anticipation of some future event or circumstance and start envisioning myself in that role before the time has arrived. It’s not always a bad thing - joyful anticipation is good after all! - but it does have the potential to backfire.
So, as I was mulling over jumping into the world of Twitter, and after I decided I didn’t want to go the route of just using my name as a Twitter handle, this song kept playing through my head. And it struck me that I want to be the kind of gal that can just roll with it, make it up as I go along, live life unguided by the expected lines of some perceived part.
And so there you have it, unguided lines. It’s a mantra, if nothing else, to be who I am regardless of what others might expect that to entail.
“We were all delighted, we all realized we were leaving confusion and nonsense behind and performing our one and noble function of the time, move.”
-Jack Kerouac
(I snapped this in San Francisco a few months back.)
